Some of the Juniors from Wells Golf Club had an exciting day out on Thursday 18th September to Celtic Manor for the Welsh Open and look who they managed to recruit as a new member for next!
Cyder Cup Winners 2014
Will Waddington (Mendip), Mike Stringer (Wells Club Captain), Victoria Watts (Farrington Park)
The Cyder Cup, a collaboration between Farrington Park and Wells GC was played for on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th August.
Whilst it has a relatively short five year history the Cyder Cup has found itself at the centre of many golfers favourite two day summer pursuits and the unique Cyder Cup Pottery trophy is much coveted.
The format was an 18 hole 4BBB Stableford on both days, played off 3/4 handicap. Fifty two pairs of players from clubs across the County and as far afield as Weymouth, Romsey, Cotswold Hills and Wareham took part and whilst most pairs were Men there was a good collection of Lady pairs as well as Mixed Pairs. The breadth of composition of pairs and the clubs they come from coupled with the competition being played at two different clubs really gives the Cyder Cup a unique feel.
Farrington Park and Wells GC work very closely together and the two clubs alternate which club administers bookings and which club has the first and second day of the competition each year.
This year Wells GC hosted day one and Farrington Park organised the bookings and hosted day two of the competition.
The winning Best Overall Pair was Farrington Park's Victoria Watts with Mendip GC's Will Waddington with 86 points.
As well as the Cyder Cup, the winners, Mendip GC's Will Waddington and Farrington Park's Victoria Watts, were each presented with a handmade pottery mug, turned by potter Paul Jessop of Barrington Pottery, creator of the Cyder Cup Trophy.
In their speech Victoria and Will commented on how they loved taking part in a such a unique two day competition played at two clubs that each had superb courses both of which played fantastically well and were a credit to their green keepers.
